At Disney's Research and Development lab, a place some liken to "Area 51," magic and technology intertwine. It's a place where playful droids and electromagnetic eyes come to life, and where even the lightsabers hum and whirr just like in the movies.
Lanny Smoot, Disney's most decorated inventor, stands at the forefront of these fantastical creations. With over 70 patents with Disney and more than 100 throughout his career, Smoot's innovations are pivotal in maintaining the allure of Disney's parks.
Smoot introduced the electromagnetic eye to replace the intricate mechanisms inside animatronic heads. Using magnets and coils, these eyes can move left, right, up, and down, enhancing the lifelike quality of Disney characters such as chameleon Pascal and the floating head of Madame Leota.
Smoot's crowning achievement might just be the hero lightsaber—the most realistic lightsaber Disney has ever created. This saber extends and retracts, looking identical to its movie counterpart. According to the patent, a motor in the hilt activates two long plastic semi-cylinders, which form the blade and are illuminated by a flexible LED strip.
Disney's Imagineers, guided by Smoot's inventions, aim to create new experiences that attract and captivate guests. One such groundbreaking project is the holotile—a multi-directional, modular, multi-person treadmill inspired by "Star Trek's" holodeck.
The holotile allows for unlimited walking in a small physical space. Using lidar technology, the floor senses a person's position and adjusts accordingly. This innovation could be instrumental in designing new immersive attractions in virtual and mixed reality.
Smoot's contributions extend beyond his inventions. In May, he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, making him the second person from Disney to receive this honor—the first being Walt Disney himself.
Smoot emphasizes the importance of representation in science and engineering, expressing his commitment to encouraging young people, especially those who look like him, to pursue these fields. Growing up in Brownsville, Brooklyn, Smoot understands the significance of having role models and aims to inspire the next generation of innovators.
Despite his many achievements, Smoot isn't slowing down. He continues to experiment and create, ensuring that Disney's attractions remain at the forefront of innovation and magic. His work is crucial in drawing happy, repeat guests to Disney parks, fulfilling the company's mission to create unforgettable experiences.
From playful droids to the hero lightsaber, Lanny Smoot’s work epitomizes the magic of Disney brought to life through technology. As Disney prepares for future expansions and increased competition, these innovations will undoubtedly play a central role in captivating audiences and keeping the magic fresh for generations to come.
